The Family Room
Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) does a lot of work around the world for families who are in need. McDonalds is there for the good times and the bad, making sure people know there is always someone there for them. That is why the Family Room is so important. You can find a dedicated family room at the CHOC Children’s Hospital in Orange and in Mission Viejo. These rooms are meant for families in the pediatric and neonatal intensive care units. These rooms are designed for families to take a breath and attempt to relax in a normal setting while still being close to their loved ones who are getting medical attention. You can find things like games, books, snacks, and so much more in these rooms.
Getting Involved
There are some Ronald McDonald House Family Room volunteer tips you can utilize. However, you first should know what volunteering in a Family Room looks like. Volunteers are asked to help keep the Family Rooms a clean and safe space. All volunteers are asked to uphold the Ronald McDonald Family Room policies, support families, and maintain a friendly atmosphere for guests to enjoy. The most important of all the tips is to know the commitment. RMHC asks that anyone who volunteers make a one-year commitment for at least one, 4-hour shift a week. This is not a simple volunteer situation; this is helping the community on a regular basis.
Ronald McDonald House Family Room Volunteer Shifts
The reason for a one-year commitment is so that families get a sense of consistency when they can use it most. This will help give them a sense of stability during a time that feels so unstable in their lives. You will want to know what the shift times are before making a one-year commitment to volunteering with Ronald McDonald House Charities. There are three different shifts available each day and you can pick any that are available. The first shift is the morning shift from 9 AM until 1 PM. The afternoon shift is from 1 PM until 5 PM and the last shift is from 5 PM until 9 PM. You will be asked to pick one shift each week.
Communication
Another one of the more important Ronald McDonald House Family Room volunteer tips is all about communication. Volunteers will be asked to communicate with the families in the room. The goal is to create a compassionate space for people to relax without having to worry about other things. That means communication is a required skill. Friendly people can excel in this opportunity.
Ronald McDonald House Family Room Volunteer Upkeep
The Family Room is designed to mimic a small home right in the hospital. There is a family room with a TV, internet access, a kitchenette stocked with snacks and coffee, books, a seating area with another TV, and two rooms specifically for sleeping either during the day or overnight. One of the easiest Ronald McDonald House Family Room volunteer tips is to be ready to keep these rooms up. You will be responsible for keeping the area ready for families to visit when they need it most.
